Nappy Cost Calculator
Find out what nappies really cost per month and per year, and see how small changes add up over a full year.
Your nappy cost estimate
How the nappy cost calculator works
This tool turns three simple numbers — how many nappies your baby uses per day, the price of a pack, and how many nappies are in that pack — into a clear monthly and yearly cost. It first works out the cost per nappy by dividing the pack price by the pack size. Then it multiplies your daily nappy count by 7 for a weekly total, by about 30.4 for a monthly total (the average number of days in a month), and by 365 for a yearly total. Multiplying those quantities by the cost per nappy gives you spending over each period.
Seeing the yearly number is often the eye-opener. A difference of just a few pence per nappy looks tiny on the shelf, but across thousands of nappies in a single year it can add up to a meaningful amount of money. The calculator makes that long-term picture obvious so you can decide whether a bulk box, a different brand, or a subscription is worth it.
How many nappies do babies use by age?
Newborns go through nappies fastest because they feed often and have many small, frequent bowel movements. As babies grow, feeds space out and nappy changes become less frequent. These ranges are a helpful starting point, and the calculator pre-fills a typical value when you pick an age group:
| Age | Typical nappies per day | Roughly per month |
|---|---|---|
| Newborn (0–1 month) | 10–12 | ~300–365 |
| Infant (1–5 months) | 8–10 | ~240–305 |
| Baby (5–12 months) | 6–8 | ~180–245 |
| Toddler (12+ months) | 5–7 | ~150–215 |
Your baby may sit above or below these ranges, and that is completely normal. If you already track changes, use your own daily count for the most accurate result.
A worked example
Imagine a four-month-old who uses 8 nappies a day. You buy a pack of 84 nappies for £9.99. The cost per nappy is about 12p. Over a month that is roughly 243 nappies, or close to 3 packs, for about £29 per month — and around £348 over a year. If you switched to a larger box that brought the price down to 9p per nappy, the yearly cost would drop by well over £80 without changing anything else about your routine.
Ways to lower your nappy costs
- Buy the right size, not the biggest box of the wrong size. Babies outgrow newborn and size 1 quickly, so avoid overstocking small sizes.
- Compare cost per nappy, not pack price. A bigger box almost always wins, but only the per-nappy number tells you for sure. This calculator shows it for you.
- Use subscribe-and-save plans for a steady discount, and stack shop loyalty points or cashback when you can.
- Try supermarket own-brands. Many parents find a supermarket nappy that works just as well for a lower price. Buy one small pack to test fit and absorbency first.
- Don't change more than needed. Change promptly after bowel movements and when wet, but you don't need to change a lightly wet nappy every hour.
Reusable nappies and the bigger picture
This calculator estimates disposable nappy spending. Reusable (cloth) nappies have a higher upfront cost but a much lower per-use cost, plus laundry expenses for water, detergent, and electricity. Many families use a mix — reusables at home and disposables for travel or nursery. If you are weighing reusable versus disposable, use the yearly disposable figure from this tool as the number to beat, then add up the cost of a reusable set plus estimated laundry over the same period.
Wipes add up too
Wipes are an easy cost to overlook. If you use two wipes per change and your baby has eight changes a day, that is sixteen wipes daily — roughly 480 a month. Turn on the optional wipes fields above to fold that into your monthly and yearly totals so your budget reflects reality.
Limitations of this estimate
This is a planning tool, not a guarantee. It assumes a steady daily nappy count and a single price, while real life includes growth spurts, sick days, sales, gifts, and brand switches. Prices also change over time and differ between regions and currencies. Treat the result as a well-informed ballpark and revisit it whenever your baby moves up a size or your usual price changes.
Frequently asked questions
- How much do nappies cost per month?
- For many families, disposable nappies cost roughly £35–£60 per month in the first year, depending on brand and how many nappies your baby uses each day. Use the calculator above with your real pack price to get a number for your situation.
- How many nappies does a baby use per day?
- Newborns often use 10–12 nappies a day. By a few months old this usually drops to 8–10, and older babies and toddlers use around 5–7. Babies are most expensive to nappy in the early months.
- Is it cheaper to buy nappies in bulk?
- Usually yes. Larger boxes and subscribe-and-save plans lower the price per nappy. Enter your bulk pack price and pack size above to compare the cost per nappy against smaller packs.
- Does the calculator include wipes?
- It can. Fill in the optional wipes fields (wipes per change, wipes per pack, and pack price) and the calculator adds a monthly and yearly wipes estimate to your total.
